Facebook Timeline for Brands

Is the addition of the Facebook Timeline a dream or nightmare for the marketer? Well, that’s actually up to you.

Traditionalists take note: Just when you thought you had a handle on Facebook, it’s going to change the way Brand Pages will function. On March 30th, Facebook will be switching all the brand pages to the new “Timeline” function. The bad news? You’ll have to readjust your current social media strategy. The good news? You get to readjust your current social media strategy. There’s nothing wrong with a little spring cleaning when it comes to a marketing plan.

A Few Changes

Sure, there will probably be a huge backlash, but let’s look at the positives. Those that pay attention to their strategies, fans and how they’re presenting their brand will be the victors.

Take note of these features:

  • Large cover photo as well as the profile picture. Try to incorporate both as a cohesive unit – this is where you can get creative and make a good first impression!
  • Remember – only 3 left-side tabs will be above the fold. Think about what’s most important to you for these placements.
  • No default pages.
  • Pinned events stay at the top of the timeline for a longer period of time.
  • Can send or receive private messages from others. Makes engaging with customers and fans a breeze!

What Can You Do?

This is the time to be creative! Have fun with the look and experiment with what works and what would turn fans away. You have time, so use it wisely.

  • Now is the time to go through your social media plan in regards to Facebook. Pictures? Videos?
  • Remember to advertise promotions.
  • Add corporate history to give a sense of attachment to readers.
