Writing your Blog Posts with Style

Posted by Francois Muscat On February - 22 - 2012

Tone, character and style in a blog post can be just as important as the words themselves. Is your writing style scaring off your readers?

Adding a blog is important to a successful social media plan, however the readers of the blogosphere are a different breed. They usually expect a certain easy-to-read style.  This is quite an important aspect of blog marketing as a well-written and effective blog post can lead to a sale or a business lead.  Your blog audience expects your writing to have a personality, and be more than just words on a page. Your writing has to jump up and grab them. Nothing turns off a blog reader faster than a harsh writing style that’s difficult to read and understand.

Here are few tips that can help you write better blog posts:

  • Topic. Are you suffering from writer’s block? Maybe you are just not passionate about the subject you are writing about. Write about something you know well, and something specific. Avoid general and wide-sweeping subjects. Try looking at things in a different way. Ideas are all around you.
  • Be Clear To Your Audience. If you don’t have a clear understanding of your audience, you won’t know what messages will excite them. What does the reader want to know? In writing the body of your work, use terms and phrases they will recognize and identify with. Talk to your audience – not above them.
  • Original Content. New and original blog content will get a reader’s attention. Simply quoting others and echoing previously written content is boring. Blogging is about experimenting and discovering what works for you and your audience. Don’t be afraid to try something new. You never know what people will react to.
  • Use Action Words. These are verbs like “make”, “do”, “write”, “take”, and “build.” When people are searching, they like to be told “what to do”. Tell them.
  • Spelling and Grammar. Mistakes distract people from the content they are reading. Even though blogs may be less formal, it’s still important to be vigilant and spell check your work. Even if this means getting someone else to read it, take the extra step to get it just right.
  • Be Entertaining. Think of an entertaining angle, and don’t forget to use visuals. Adding a picture or graph to your post will give it a bit more life. Also, don’t forget to use interesting language to be a hit with your readers.
  • Call to Action. Although last on this list, it should be first in your mind. Call to Actions (CTAs) can be one of the most important aspects of your blog post. Add a clear call to action at the end of a posting to increase the likelihood readers will engage, not just sit back and take note.
