Your Social Media networking Return on Investment (ROI) is directly related to either the money you spend in digital marketing, or the time and effort you spend in creating and building strong profiles on whatever social media channels you deem effective.  Remember that some businesses will benefit more from spending additional effort on “niche” networks that may have less traffic, but are more targeted to your ultimate consumer.

Most of the information available on Social Networking focuses on what you should do in order to carry out an effective and profitable social media campaign for your business. But there are also some things you should be careful to avoid.

These are my top five common social media networking mistakes:

1. Setting up a social networking presence like a blog, Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, or Twitter page and then not keeping it populated –consistency and fresh content are key.

2. Not remembering that social media is about engaging in a conversation and not just about selling your product or service.

3. Spending all of your time on sites you enjoy and not really evaluating whether or not that particular site is the most effective one for your efforts. You need to measure your success on each network you use in order to be sure that you are spending your time wisely.

4. Going to a social network to update your status and then being distracted by friends or colleagues who may have posted something interesting or something that you think requires an immediate response.

5. Not being able to measure the effectiveness of each social network, and properly defining when it is more cost-effective to outsource or delegate certain social media responsibilities to someone more qualified to handle.

    If your network contains a high number of contacts but no relationship with any of them it will not be successful.   It is important to create a network that is both wide and deep. This is done by being visible and engaging in the conversation.  This gives you credibility which leads to improving your brand image and hence your sales. Ultimately this will give you the best ROI for your online social media networking efforts.
