When it was first thrust into the spotlight in 2007 at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, Twitter looked like it was going to be the pet rock of social media: A cute, trendy, much-talked-about fad that would quickly end up in the time capsule. Three years later, Twitter has proven itself to be not only a big player in the social media arena but a must-have digital marketing tool for business owners looking for ways to speak directly to their customer base all day long. Using 140 characters or less, businesses, authors and non-profit organizations can tell their followers the latest news and happenings. We gathered up some of Twitter’s best success stories to illustrate how the little blue bird can mean big business.
For retail shops like New York’s Blend New York, Twitter is used to alert shoppers to new merchandise. With nearly 8,000 followers, the boutique keeps fashion fans in the know with what’s hot and what’s on sale. Owner Christine Abbate’s tweeting has paid off: She ranks tops in Twitter fashion searches on Google and continues to garner groupies.
One-time or annual designer sample sales across the country have had big success with Twitter, too. And then there are the art shows, corporate parties and music events that have exploded on Twitter. In Los Angeles, where what’s hot reigns supreme, Twitter has re-invigorated small businesses. The city has experienced a surge in food trucks thanks to Twitter. These kitchens on wheels have been a city staple for decades, but it wasn’t until Twitter that they became hip. Businesses like Buttermilk, a food truck that specializes in gourmet pancakes, alert their followers via Twitter to their whereabouts and turn the ordinary into a must-attend event. One such event featured all the city’s Twitter trucks and drew in 30,000 hungry visitors in one night.
Even your neighborhood Goodwill is tweeting. Local branches of America’s oldest charity thrift shop tweet events, drop off info, sales and new arrivals. Goodwill joins the list of long-standing non-profit organizations that have found new life thanks to rigorous tweeting.
But don’t take our word for it. Take Twitter digital marketing into your own hands.
