Local or international social networks?

Posted by Francois Muscat On December - 22 - 2010

Social networking (Web 2.0) channels such as LinkedIn and Facebook have exploded in popularity and they are growing continuously in the digital marketing realm. There are literally thousands of international social networking channels to choose from each with their own specialities and niches.

Social network communities retains the interests of their members by being useful to them.  Some of the popular social networks provides services that’s entertaining as well.  These services can also help you expand your existing network and business services.  Facebook, for instance, allows members to create and customize (HTML customization with the addition of FBML) personal or business fan pages on a specific topic or niche.  You can link blog posts, videos, information and even music to these fan pages.

Different social networks

As mentioned, many social networks features their own specialities. LinkedIn is more of a business networking channel where Facebook is more social. There is an overlap between the social and business networks. On LinkedIn you establish a good rapport with your business contacts, then one starts discussing things other than just business. With Facebook, you are in a social setting and discussions may lead to talk about business. This way one is for business and one is for pleasure.

Even though these social networks – LinkedIn and Facebook are massive (only two of the many international social networks), do you only focus on international social networks or local country specific networks?

In my opinion, participating in both international and local social networks could have many benefits for your business. By actively participating on international social networks you are opening up your doors for business internationally and local social networks are usually country specific.
