Simple and important tips that will make your headline stand out from the crowd.
Getting visitors of your blog to keep reading past a headline is an intricate recipe of hitting just the right emotional strings. You could have the world’s most innovative and brilliantly composed blog post, but if your headline doesn’t catch their attention the odds of them getting to the good stuff are reduced drastically. A good headline can make or break a social media strategy.
Check out these tips to give life to your headline and grab your readers’ interest:
1) The AIDA Concept. Although very traditional, the AIDA concept still applies today. Make sure your headline is ATTENTION grabbing, induces INTEREST and DESIRE, and makes someone want to take ACTION on the headline (meaning read the rest of the post).
2) The Benefit. In your headline, think about including some sort of benefit that the reader would enjoy. Will they learn something new? Will it make them money? Will it make them famous?
3) Use Your Words. Since shorter headlines work much better than longer ones, every word has to count. Try to incorporate a keyword if it sounds natural. Also, pay attention to trigger words and phrases including “How To” and “5 Tips”, as well as emotional triggers like fear, love or problem/solution.
4) Create Curiosity. Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it also makes you read to the end of a story. Catch your readers with the possibility of an answer to your question. For example: “Do You Want to Get Rich Faster?” Who wouldn’t want to read an article like that?
Once you’ve started polishing your headlines, look back and analyze the statistics of your new posts. See what headlines are garnering better engagement and what ones are getting the fewest tweets, comments and clicks. Being a headline expert may take time, but if the end result is more people reading what you have to say, it’s definitely worth it to practice.
