Google Places Update

Posted by David Duncan On January - 19 - 2011

Google recently announced key changes to the way local search results are displayed and the first page results have dramatically changed as a result. What does this mean for local businesses then? Let’s review Google’s explanation:

…a new kind of local search result that organizes the world’s information around places. We’ve clustered search results around specific locations so you can more easily make comparisons and decide where to go.

What this means is that local search results are displayed more prominently than before and it will make the search results more relevant to the searcher. In practice it means that businesses’ digital marketing strategies will have to be much more proactive in managing their local placings. Simply entering it once and leaving it will no longer work and businesses will have to be much more proactive in managing their listings to maintain a first page listing.

Here are a few tips to help make the most of your Google Places entry:

1 - Make sure every field in your entry is complete with up to date relevant information

2 - Refine the listing to make sure that the correct categories are listed

3 - Add images and video that support your listing and use the custom fields available

4 - Obtain testimonials or reviews from clients since positive ones boost the listing

5 - Use the “Places Posting” feature to keep your entry up to date always with new content

6 - Use additional directories to promote your business since this strengthens your brand

Google has made search more locally focused, and Facebook Places and Foursquare are changing the way that users interact with their immediate environment, so local search is at the forefront of social media. Do not leave it to chance! Make sure your Google Places listing is fully completed and visible to make the most of the opportunity it provides for a first page listing.
