What Do We Look for in a New WSI Internet Franchise Owner?

As a member of WSI’s Franchise Development team, I’m often asked “Who are your franchisees?” That is to say, “What industries did they come from before joining WSI?”, “What skills are most valuable to a WSI Consultant?”, “Why did they choose WSI over another franchise?”

These are important questions to ask when evaluating a business. One wants to ensure they have the skills needed to be successful, but also to that they will fit within the culture of the franchise they are selecting.

This past year WSI surveyed our most recent franchisees to understand where they came from in terms of background, education and lifestyle, but also what they were looking for in a franchise and why they chose a WSI Internet Franchise. I’d like to share some of these results with you and offer some commentary.

What We Found

Last year, for example we found that 36% of our franchisees came from the IT industry. But less than 4% came from roles such as engineers or developers. Business Managers, sales & marketing professionals, and existing entrepreneurs were among the largest percentage of WSI Internet franchisees. This is not unusual; our system is designed to keep our owners in front of their clients, and allow WSI’s network of suppliers handle the technology. An understanding of technology is important, but an understanding of how to build and manage relationships with clients in a consulting business such as WSI is paramount. Other interesting statistics tell us that work/life balance was the largest motivating factor for our owners to start their business. This is not unusual especially for those coming from the Corporate world looking for more control over how to manage their lifestyle. WSI is a mobile franchise that allows owners to dictate how they want to grow their business and spend their time where they value it most. Click on figure 1-2 to view details.

Education is also important, we found that last year 84% of our new franchisees had a university education or higher, and we have doubled the amount of franchisees who have MBA’s. As a franchisor, we look for individuals with an intellectual curiosity. Our industry is dynamic and fluid, always changing, as is WSI. Therefore, we constantly train and educate IC’s throughout the duration of their business, the people who thrive in that environment are the ones who will take advantage of WSI’s philosophy of lifelong learning.

The simple fact is that there is no one specific industry, role, or profile that WSI looks for in a franchisee. Our digital marketing consultants come from industries as similar or dissimilar to WSI as you could imagine. They may not all be experts in our industry, but they’re their passion for knowledge, their love of business, and their drive to make a difference in the lives of their clients that make them WSI Consultants.
