Challenging job and capital markets created the opportunity for me to try something new.  I was looking for opportunities that would not require any employees and targeted any large and growing market.  I idealistically wanted to find something that was low-tech / high-margin, but welcomed anything that would leverage my background and involved information technology in a consultative sale.

I was looking at opportunities to capitalize on the growing aging population in the U.S. I saw an article in the local San Diego newspaper that featured FranNet, and where Blair Nicol described how many people in my situation had taken advantage of franchises.  That’s where I learned about BrightStar, a home healthcare-provider franchisor.  My preliminary research let me know that this probably wasn’t for me:  too many employees.

I then attended a seminar where Blair and FranNet explained franchising and provided the chance for franchisors to present their offerings.  That’s where I was introduced to WSI. I was not aware that there were franchises like WSI. Imran Rana did a great job describing the market that WSI franchisees addressed, and the business models that WSI enables.

I arranged sessions where Blair helped me figure out if a franchise and WSI in particular, was a good fit for me.  Blair introduced me to a couple of other franchisors:  a translation company and an IT-outsourcing company.  Blair’s profiling tools helped me realize that I did not want a straight sales business.  He reconfirmed that I needed a consultative sale, and that I needed to be involved in the delivery of whatever product/service I delivered.  Plus, he reconfirmed that I preferred a B-to-B business.

Blair also helped me in my due diligence with some good questions to ask franchisees, and with some good insights on how to use a lawyer.

In looking back, I also realize that Blair’s involvement also helped create some urgency for me.  He would tactfully remind me of materials that he sent me and ask me about the status of my decision-making process.

Blair and FranNet’s tools can help a wide variety of potential franchisees.  In particular, if a person is clueless about what direction to take their career, Blair’s profiling tools and his interview techniques would help focus the person.
