What is a Social Media Marketing Campaign?

Posted by David Duncan On July - 6 - 2010

Social media marketing campaigns can be quite different to generic search engine marketing campaigns even although there are many similarities. A true social media marketing campaign is more focused on lead generation and brand awareness as well as promoting the products and services of the company directly.

A social media marketing campaign is also often considered to provide a more varied link building process which ensures that it will reward you with good quality back links to your site of course social media marketing campaigns require a significant amount of planning and preparation.

Social media marketing campaigns will take advantage of highly focused sites and business networking sites such as LinkedIn, Ecademy, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and so on, as well as other complementary web sites and social bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Stumble Upon or Digg.

The aim of a good social media marketing campaign is to develop either business or brand awareness in a defined market place where the products or services you supply will be in demand not to specifically develop back links as such although this is bound to happen. It is also to establish you or your company as an industry authority, a go-to person or trusted advisor, or even a business that can help other people solve their own problems or critical business issues by the provision of quality goods and services.

While the advantages of a social media marketing campaign are undeniable, there are a number of downsides which you need to be aware of.

One of the largest issues facing a company implementing a social media marketing campaign is the sheer amount of time and work that needs to be maintained to develop a business’s authority and profile across the many social sites. This makes these campaigns very hands on and the subtle promotion of your business involves generating useful information and tips for general publication and syndication, is very time consuming. So you need quality pages on your web site, blog posts, entries on relevant forums relevant to the markets that you service, all of these entries can contain quality links back to your site. Of course this activity needs to be kept up to date and be consistently updated otherwise these profiles will quickly lose credibility and your online reputation will fade with time.

This is one of the main reasons that many businesses decide that the best strategy is to employ someone to manage this complex digital marketing process and maintain the necessary consistency of approach. As long as the business provides the accurate source information then the online brand  awareness can be maintained.
