What’s Next? Some Lessons for SMEs

Yesterday I was featured on Aftermarket Business’ website discussing digital marketing tips for business owners and how they can effectively build an online customer base. Ultimately, my suggestion to all business owners is that you start small. Especially if you’re the owner of a small to medium sized business who identifies strongly with the personal service, passion and entrepreneurial spirit unique to many SMEs.

SMEs need to recognize that big businesses were not always big – they worked hard to become that way. Most of your biggest competitors started out significantly smaller and only grew through wise decision making and implementing innovative business practices. Examining the practices of big businesses can help small to medium sized businesses succeed.

Here are some lessons from big businesses to keep in mind:

  1. Experience Matters: most SMEs can’t afford the resources that big businesses can. So the lesson is to be resourceful and leverage the expertise of someone else in areas outside of your specialization. Let experts in their field help you succeed in yours.
  2. Being Methodical Pays Off: no large company will take on a venture without clear guidelines to drive it. But, sometimes, as passionate entrepreneurs, SMEs can jump into projects without fully determining their requirements and weighing the pros and cons. Ensure that the initiatives your business undertakes are well thought out and the results are measured. You want to ensure that you are getting the best possible return on your investment!
  3. Think Big: big businesses didn’t get that way by being content; they’re always thinking “What’s next?” SMEs generally are not equipped to allotting enough time to researching avenues for future growth, but you need to recognize your current success and find ways to leverage that success to take it even farther. Work with someone who will help you see the big picture. You’ll be able to profit from their experience, research and product offering, while still focusing your efforts on running your business.
